Prep softball: Holdingford takes out Paynesville
WAITE PARK — Paynesville’s dream season came to an abrupt end Friday as the top-seeded Bulldogs were eliminated from the Section 6AA-East playoffs after losing 9-8 to Holdingford.
The Bulldogs, who end the season 17-2, were two outs away from staying alive in the loser’s bracket, but Holdingford plated four runs in the top half of the seventh to storm ahead 9-8. Paynesville didn’t stage a threat in the bottom half, allowing the No. 2 Huskers to become the third team to reach the final four of the section tournament.
Paynesville went 2-2 in the playoffs after ending the regular season unbeaten at 15-0.
The Bulldogs trailed Holdingford for most the game until they pulled ahead 6-5 in the fifth when Lexi Skoglund scored on Brooke Hemmesch’s groundout. Paynesville then scored twice in the sixth before an error led to three runs in the seventh for the Huskers.
Kayla Schaefer tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth for Paynesville when she connected on a bases-loaded, two-out single on a full-count pitch from Holdingford’s Alyssa Ohman.
Jacque Solum had three of Paynesville’s 13 hits, while Wuertz, Bri Stang and Megan Schaefer each supplied two more.
