Prep Softball: Minnewaska moves into first-place tie
Tribune Staff Report
ALBANY -- Allyssa Engfer knocked in four runs and Julie Helander went 4-for-4 Wednesday to help Minnewaska hand Albany its first loss as the Lakers pulled out a 6-5 West Central North Conference win in eight innings to extend their winning streak to eight.
Both teams now have one loss in the six-team conference as Minnewaska (7-1, 13-2) avenged a 12-7 loss to the Huskies (5-1, 9-1) on April 12 in Glenwood.
A three-run fourth put the Lakers ahead 4-2, but Albany tied it in the bottom half of the frame. Three scoreless innings followed until both teams struck in the eighth.
Mady Phillips led off the Minnewaska eighth with a single before advancing to third base on Helander's fourth hit of the game. Bridget Opdahl was then inserted into the game as a pinch runner for Helander and shortly later the junior stole second.
Engfer then brought Phillips and Opdahl home with a two-out double.
The Huskies got one run back in the home half when Karli Persson scored on Heather Nierenhausen's single, but Phillips then induced a 5-3 groundout to end the game and earn a complete-game win in the pitcher's circle.
Albany outhit the Lakers 13-12. Engfer finished with three hits and Courtney Schmidt supplied Minnewaska with two singles and an RBI.
