Prep Softball: Morris/CA routs LQPV, edges Benson/Hancock

MORRIS -- Morris/Chokio-Alberta held off upset-minded Benson/Hancock for a 2-1 win to advance to the third round of the Section 3AA-North softball tournament on Tuesday.

Morris/CA (20-2), the top seed, blanked Lac qui Parle Valley 17-0 in the first round. Benson/Hancock drubbed BOLD 8-1 in the other first-round game.

Morris/CA meets Redwood Valley at 1 p.m. Sautrday in Marshall with the remainder of the tournament moving into a double-elimination format.

First round

Morris/CA 17, LQPV 0

Mackenzie Weatherly and McKenzie VanBatavia combined to toss a perfect game with Weatherly tossing the first four innings. Weatherly struck out eight and VanBatavia fanned two in the fifth.

The Tigers plated 10 runs in the first after 16 batters came to the plate. Sadie Fischer and Kelsey DeCamp had three hits apiece and combined to drive in five runs.

Benson/Hancock 8, BOLD 1

Benson/Hancock scored four runs in the second and two more in the third to take control. Kendra Schmidgall highlighted the second with a two-run homer and Kenzie Jensen singled in two runs in the third.

Sara Rajewsky gave up four hits and four walks while striking out two in her complete-game win.

Alex Ebnet had two hits for BOLD.

Montevideo 8, Marshall 7

(At Redwood Falls) -- No. 6 seed Montevideo pulled an upset fueled by one big inning. Ashley Hoehne and Lindsey Olson each hit 2-run singles in a seven-run Montevideo fourth inning.

The rally, which included seven of Montevideo's 10 hits, overcame a 4-1 deficit.

Winning pitcher Vanessa Jordahl gave up eight hits, walked four and survived seven errors by the fielders to erase the No. 3 seed.

Second round

Morris/CA 2, Benson/Hancock 1

Benson/Hancock took a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Kayla Jones led off the inning with a solo home run. But Morris/CA tied it in the bottom half of the frame on Weatherly's sacrifice fly. Weatherly then drove in the winning run in the seventh when her two-out, bases-loaded single up the middle brought in Fischer.

Weatherly gave up just two hits while striking out 10 and walking one to earn another win.

Sara Rajewsky gave up six hits in her complete-game performance for the BraveOwls. She walked six and struck out none.

Redwood Valley 10, Montevideo 0

Sam Felt tossed a no-hitter and drove in four runs with a pair of hits to lead the No. 2 seed at Redwood Falls.

Felt walked the leadoff batter in the first inning and later hit a batter, but otherwise was perfect while fanning five Thunder Hawks. Redwood Valley made no errors behind her.

Montevideo ends the season 3-14.

Section 6AA-West

Minnewaska and Paynesville were both eliminated from Section 6AA-West softball tournament on Tuesday, ending the seasons of two of the area's top teams this season.

No. 2-seed Albany drubbed No. 3 Minnewaska (17-4) 10-1, while top-seeded Rocori upended No. 5 Paynesville (16-4) 8-2.

Karli Persson limited Minnewaska to just three hits while striking out nine.

Kaylyn Oberg had a single and adouble for the Lakers in three trips. Jordan Stalker had the other hit.

Rocori 8, Paynesville 2

Rocori scored five times in the sixth inning to blow the game open.

The Bulldogs (16-4) trailed 3-2 after Brooke Wuertz's two-run single plated Jessica Solum, who had doubled, and Sam Dahl who had walked, in the top of the fifth.

The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.

Wuertz went 3-for-3 and Jenna Kincade had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Jackie Skoglund took the loss.

Jessica Heinen who went 3-for-4, scored three times and knocked in three runs for Rocori (18-3).

Maria Toren scattered eight hits for the win.
