Prep softball roundup: KMS wins 2 to reach finals

COTTONWOOD — The KMS softball team ran its record to 21-0 and advanced in the Section 3A playoffs with two wins Saturday.

The Saints turned a pair of four-run innings into a 9-4 win over Wabasso, then scored five in the first inning and downed Edgerton 6-2.

Erin Haglund got the win in both games, recording 22 strikeouts.

Against Wabasso, Sam Dunn doubled in three runs and Sam Gjerde singled in a run in the Saints’ four-run second.

In the fourth, Haglund singled in a run and then Courtney Olson hit a three-run home run to centerfield.

Against Edgerton, the Saints collected seven hits in a five-run first inning and Haglund didn’t walk a batter while allowing six hits.

The Saints now play for the section championship and a return to the Class A state tournament at 5 p.m. Thursday. They will play either Wabasso, Windom or Edgerton, all of which would need to defeat the Saints twice to win the section.

Sadie Fischer had an RBI double in the first inning for the Tigers only run.

The Tigers are 13-8 overall and play Fairmont 5 p.m. today in Marshall in the Section 3AA losers’ bracket.

The Lakers scored a run in the third on a Madison Phillips RBI but Pequot Lakes pitcher Katie White was solid, allowing no earned runs and striking out seven.
