MONTEVIDEO — Tied 5-5, the Hawks pushed across 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 15-5 win from Benson/Hancock on Monday in West Central Conference softball.

Montevideo batted 13 in the game-ending frame; Paige Jorgenson had safely twice and finished with three hits, as did Mikaela Erickson.

Ashley Hoehne, the winning pitcher, Kelsey Olson, Hannah Kuno, Whitney Bartz and Erickson drove in two runs each.

 Losing pitcher Kayla Jones went 3-for-3 for the BraveOwls and Gabi Doscher supplied a pair of hits, one a double.

Yellow Medicine East sophomore Ariel Sakry hit a solid single to left field with two outs in the seventh inning to break up Alyssa Lueck’s bid for a no-hitter.

It was the only hit for the Sting as Lueck was backed by a six-run sixth inning that saw 12 Cardinals visit the plate.

Minnewaska goes to 10-4 with a victory over a section opponent at Wadena.

Madison Phillips threw five-shutout innings for the win.  Kacie Kollman smacked a three-run homer in the first and Shanae Suchy hit a solo shot later, both blows over the fence.

Julie Helander had four hits in a 14-hit Lakers’ attack.

Already ahead 3-0, Morris/Chokio-Alberta added what proved to be much-needed offense in the fifth when back-to-back singles from McKenzie Van Batavia and Abbie Olson preceded back-to-back doubles from Brooke Johnson and Nicole Strobel.

The mid-game outburst gave the Tigers a short-lived 7-0 lead as Melrose scored twice in the sixth and four more times in the seventh.

Steph Hennen added two singles for the Tigers, who improved to 7-6 overall. Van Batavia fanned seven and surrendered four hits and just one earned run in six-plus innings of work to earn the win.

Amber Borstad won a battle of a close play at the plate to scoring the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for Dawson-Boyd. Earlier in the inning Amber Borstad singled in Hailey Mork to tie the game at 3-3.

Justine Flattum and Nicole Jurgenson had two hits each for the Blackjacks, who had Sydney Giese outduel MACCRAY’s Jennifer Sommers in the pitcher’s circle. Flattum also scored the team’s first two runs.

Laura Hauser, Rachel Davids and Becka Kimpling each singled and scored for MACCRAY.

Four MACCRAY errors helped Dawson-Boyd plate three runs in the fourth inning and collect a sweep.

The teams combined for just five hits with Sadie Zaiser supplying two singles for the victorious Blackjacks. Zaiser helped her own cause in the pitcher’s circle as the junior limited MACCRAY to just two hits and two earned runs to pick up the win.
