Prep softball roundup: Willmar softball tops SC Apollo

ST. CLOUD — Sarah Stadem and McKenzie Hastad each homered to power the Willmar Cardinals past St. Cloud Apollo on Friday 6-4.

Heather Horning struck out 9 in a complete-game performance, allowing 1 earned run and walking 2.

The Cardinals improved to 4-4 in the Central Lakes Conference and 5-6 overall. Apollo is 1-6, 3-9.

Hastad’s home run was a 3-run shot that came in the fifth inning.

Stadem provided an insurance run with a solo shot in the top of the seventh.

The Cardinals next play 5 p.m. Monday at Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. The Fighting Saints are undefeated and are leading the Class A Camden Conference.

BOLD 5, YME 4

OLIVIA — BOLD and Yellow Medicine East split a pair on Friday.

BOLD scored all it runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 5-4.

The late-inning thrills were reversed in the other game with YME scoring 7 run in its last at bat to win 14-13.

Elsa Skeie and Brea Grund had RBI hits in the Warriors late rally.

YME was outhit 17 to 8 in game two but took advantage of a 13 free passes.

BOLD’s P:aige Larsen doubled and tripled and drove in four runs in the loss. Megan Odegard and Allie Trudel each drove in 3 runs for the Sting in the YME win.

Dawson-Boyd swept a Camden Conference doubleheader from Renville County West on Friday.

The Blackjacks won 14-13 and 10-8.

Andrea Lee hit a three-run homer to tie game one in the fifth inning, then singled in Alysa Strand with the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Amber Borstad was 4-for-5 with two doubles and Justine Flattum was 4-for-5. RCW’s Morgan Zaske was 3-for-4.

In game two, the Blackjacks built a 9-2 lead and withstood a Jaguars rally in the final two innings.

Flattum and Borstad both had three hits and Nicole Jurgenson was 2-for-3 with a triple.

RCW’s Analisa Zaske was 3-for-3.

D-B is now 8-5 and the Blackjacks travel to play a doubleheader against MACCRAY on Monday in Raymond.

A four-run third inning pushed Sauk Centre in front and the Mainstreeters held on after Brooke Johnson scored in the bottom half of the frame for the Tigers.

Chelsey Ehleringer and Becca Holland scored in the first for Morris/Chokio-Alberta. Ehleringer supplied two of the Tigers’ seven hits.

Montevideo 0

The Minnewaska softball team won big and then came through in a close one to take two at Montevideo on Friday.

The Lakers won game one 10-0 in five innings, then scored four run in the fifth to edge the Thunder Hawks 5-4 in game two.

Madison Phillips earned the win in both games. She also had two hits and two runs batted in in game one, and teammate Kacia Coleman was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Sydney Joos also had two hits and drove in two.

In game two, Allyssa Engfer had two hits and drove in two runs and Colleen Rutledge was 3-for-3 with a double.

Montevideo’s Paige Jorgenson, Ashley Hoehne, Kelsey Quigley and Kelsey Olson all had two hits.

The T-Hawks are 7-4 overall and play host to Benson at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
