Prep softball roundup: YME tops Montevideo

MONTEVIDEO -- Yellow Medicine East and Montevideo went back and forth with big innings, and the Sting came out on top in a 12-8 slugfest Thursday.

YME (2-1) led 3-0 in the third inning and exploded in the fourth for six runs to go up by nine off Montevideo starter Kiersti Grey.

They scored three more in the fifth off Montevideo's Ashley Hoene, but the Thunder Hawks stormed back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the inning capped by an inside-the-park home run by Dani Emkes.

Montevideo (0-2) added two more in the sixth but came up short.

Allie Trudel threw all seven innings for YME to pick up the win and Grey was tagged with the loss.

Nena McCalla had a triple and three RBIs to lead the Sting offense.

McKenzie VanBatavia struck out six and allowed three hits and three walks en route to spinning a shutout for the Tigers (2-0, 2-0).

Sadie Fischer and Tracy Meischner had two hits each to ignite the Morris/Chokio-Alberta offense that produced four runs in the first inning, another three in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Minnewaska briefly held the lead but comeback attempts in the later innings fell short in a West Central North game Thursday in Glenwood.

The Lakers lost their first game of the year and are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Julie Helander and Lexi Amundson both ripped home run balls over the fence for the Lakers and both drove in two runs. Jillian Hendrickson and Kaylee Jacobs both had two hits and drove in runs.

The Lakers play next at Wadena, at 5 p.m. today.

Freshman Kayla Schaefer went 3-for-4 and threw three innings in relief of her sister, Megan, a junior, who went the first four and got the win.

McKenzie Bangasser hit a two-run double in the third inning and New London-Spicer won its first game of the season 3-2 over Sauk Centre.

Amanda Radel threw all seven innings for the Wildcats to get the win. She struck out three and gave up one earned run.

Bangasser's double scored Fredrick and Radel to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

NLS also scored in the first when Brianna Fredrick led off the game with a triple and Radel drove her in with a base hit.
