BENSON -- Earned-run averages took a hit Tuesday when the Benson/Hancock and Lac qui Parle Valley softball teams squared off.

LQPV scored 12 runs in an inning. And lost. B/H put up twice as many runs as hits.

The bottom five hitters in the LQPV lineup accounted for 13 of the Eagles' 18 hits and scored 14 of the team's 19 runs.

And the Brave Owls' Mackenzie Jensen was 2-for-2 and scored five runs, three on steals of home. She finished with seven stolen bases.

"I've been doing this 30-plus years," said B/H head coach Ken Grunig, "and this is the first time I've seen a score like this and a 3-1/2-hour game."

The Brave Owls led 12-3 after three innings, but the Eagles took the lead thanks to a 12-run fourth. B/H tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, then scored eight runs in the fifth to stretch out the lead again.

The Brave Owls improved to 2-0 and will face a tough game at Marshall at 5 p.m. on Friday.

"That will be a real big test," Grunig said. "We 2-0 but we're real inexperienced and Marshall's a pretty good club."
