Prep softball: Warriors trip up Cards in twin bill

BRAINERD — Willmar dropped both ends of a doubleheader 2-0 and 10-6 to Brainerd in their final regular-season games Friday.

The Cardinals finished at 5-9 in the Central Lakes Conference and 6-12 overall. The Section 2AAA tournament begins Thursday. Seeding is early next week.

Willmar had 6 hits to Brainerd’s 5 in Game 1 but couldn’t push a run across in the 2-0 pitchers’ duel.

“We outhit them by one hit,” Willmar head coach Shannon Cayler said.

We had runners left on base in four innings, we just couldn’t them in.”

Heather Horning suffered the loss, allowing 1 earned run and striking out 6 over 6 innings.

Horning pitched again in Game 2 and lasted 2 innings while surrendering 4 earned runs.

In Game 2, Allie Roehl was 3-for-4 with a triple, and Leah Ruter and Kassy Linbo each had 2 RBIs.
