Prep Softball: Willmar is winless at Monticello Invite
MONTICELLO -- The Willmar softball team got to see a little more of its future pitching staff than expected during the Monticello Invite Saturday.
The Cardinals were without No. 1 pitcher Hanna Pederson and had to rely on untested junior varsity pitchers for all three games, each losses.
"Hanna pulled a muscle in her stomach warming up for Hermantown," said Willmar coach Brent Pederson. "So we decided not to risk it."
He did say that the team's ace should be available for a scheduled doubleheader Tuesday against Sartell at the high school field.
So it was up to eighth-grader Heather Horning and freshman Lindsey Atchison to carry the pitching duties for the Cardinals.
Horning went the distance in both game she pitched, losing to Esko 5-1 and Monticello 5-0. Atchison threw six innings in a 4-3 loss to Hermantown.
They did very well," Pederson said of his young pitchers. "(Against Hermantown), three of those runs were unearned. It was the same thing against Esko. We gave them a few runs and some confidence.
Horning allowed 10 runs in two games, but only four were earned. Atchison gave up only one earned run.
At the plate, Sara Kallhoff led the way with five hits and three RBI. Bevin Williams added three hits, and Chelsey Hamann, Brittney Hastad, Chelsey Wierschem and Haylee Hastad had two hits each.
