MINNEAPOLIS -- Five area swimmers have qualified for the Class A finals in today's Minnesota State Swimming and Diving Meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Willmar's Michael McLain qualified by finishing 6th in the 100 yard freestyle preliminaries on Friday. McLain also will swim in the 200 freestyle final after finishing 7th in prelims.
The top eight places in each race advance to today's finals, and the 9th through 16th finishers will race in consolation events. The Class A finals begin at noon at the Aquatic Center.
Montevideo's Tommy Payne placed second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle prelims.
Payne will be joined by teammates Tyler Gort, Adam Peters and Jack Spaeth in the 200 medley relay finals after a fifth-place finish in Friday's prelims.
Other Willmar and Montevideo swimmers will be competing in consolation races on Saturday.
For the Cardinals, Nick Aaker, Ben Fuglestad, Connor Haugen and McLain will swim in the 200 freestyle relay consolation race, and Aaker, Fuglestad, A.J.Derouin and McLain will compete in the 400 freestyle relay.
For Montevideo, Sahanji McGonigle, Payne, Peters and Spaeth will swim in the 200 freestyle relay consolation race.
Spaeth also will swim in the 100 backstroke consolation race.
