The concluding 4x400 relay needed to win to give the Cardinals a chance of catching Sartell. The foursome of Isaac Thompson, Jeff Castro, Josh Holtz and Colten Carlson did just that, hit the line four/tenths of a second ahead of Totino-Grace. The Sabres team took sixth. When all the late field event were tallied, the two Central Lakes Conference schools finished tied for third each with 343 points, trailing Totino (446) and Mankato East 387.

The highlight for the girls team, which placed eighth of nine teams, was a pair of first places by freshman Sophie Schmitz in the 400 dash (58.99) and the 800 run (2:20.64). Last year the girls team placed second (they were first-place until a DQ in the last event), but lost many points to graduation, especially sprinter/long jumper Rose Jackson, now at NDSU.

The boys leading point man was senior Chris Cunningham: third in botyh the 100 (11.40) and 200 (23.215), and fourth in long jump (19-10.75). He also ran anchor on the second lace 4x200 relay. All four boys relays finished top 3. Jordan Linde was second in the high jump (6-2) but otherwise Willmar athletes did not score well in field events, boys or girls.

Coach Jerry Popp cast the day at Stillwater High School at “very up and down” with some “great performances” and others not so great. “Boys track was strong … and girls performed very well with, at least, 11 state-honor roll efforts,” commented the coach.

Both teams finished where seeded. Schmitz 400 time is third-best all time on the Cardinal Honor Roll.
