NEW ULM -- BOLD outlasted Springfield 26-24, 19-25, 26-24, 25-14 in the Section 2A North final Thursday at New Ulm High School to advance to the Section 2A championship for the second consecutive season.

The Warriors have won 9 of their last 10 matches and will take a 16-12 record into Saturday's section final. BOLD, which also beat Springfield in last year's 2A North final, will meet Martin County West (22-10) 6 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

BOLD swept United South Central in last year's section championship to advance to its first-ever state tournament.

The Warriors' defense stymied the Tigers (26-5) Thursday by digging up 127 balls. Mallarie Steffel had a team-high 28 digs while Baylie Kubesh added 27 and Carly Sigurdson 23.

Kubesh led the offensive attack with 15 kills. Adding six kills apiece was Sigurdson, Steffel and Andrea Maher. Kubesh and Samantha Luepke had a combined 24 set assists to get the offense flowing.

PIERZ -- Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa advanced to a section championship match for the ninth straight season Thursday after sweeping Upsala 25-17, 25-22, 25-23 in the Section 5A West final at Pierz High School.

The Jaguars (25-7) collected their 19th sweep of the season and will take a seven-match winning streak into Saturday's section final against East champion Nevis (23-8-1). The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. back at Pierz High School.

This will be the fourth straight meeting between Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Nevis to determine the state tournament entrant from Section 5A. Nevis won last year's match and in 2009. BBE has won section titles in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Igniting the Jaguars' attack Thursday was four players recording eight or more kills. Taylor Braegelman led the way with 11, while Kendra Braegelman followed with 10 and Brittany Roelike and Miriah DeKok with eight each. Hailey Braegelman guided the offense with her 40 set assists.

Roelike also had team-high totals of 22 digs and two ace serves.

Becca Gruber added 5 kills and 2 ace blocks.

Montevideo fell in the 3AA-North title game, losing 25-15, 25-8, 25-11 to top-seeded Marshall.

The No. 6 T-Hawks upset No. 2 Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday to reach the title game. Montevideo finished its season 11-13-3.

Ashley Hoehne and Natalie Feldhake paced Montevideo with 5 kills each, and Feldhake had 3 ace blocks.

Nettie Duvall and Alyssa Stern each had 4 kills, and Tori Kuhlmann had 18 set assists.
