Prep volleyball: Brainerd tops Cards in 5

BRAINERD — The Willmar volleyball team won its first two games of a Central Lakes Conference match at Brainerd in convincing fashion on Thursday.

But the Warriors didn’t buckle, rebounding with authority to down the Cardinals in five games.

Brainerd won 12-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 15-6.

The Cardinals lost their fourth straight match and fell to 11-12-1.

Brainerd snapped a nine-game losing streak during which the Warriors won just two games.

Willmar’s Leah Ruter was a workhorse at the net, with 63 hitting attempts. She finished with 18 kills, 4 ace blocks and 15 digs.

Dani Rosen had 13 kills and 4 blocks, and Riley Grussing had 47 set assists.

The Cardinals attempt to get back on track with another CLC match at St. Cloud Apollo at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
