WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals were on the verge of handing Fergus Falls its first Central Lakes Conference Thursday, but the Otters chewed away at the Cardinals to go home with a 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-11 win.

Katie Lippert had 17 kills and Emily Minnick followed with 16, but no one else averaged more than two kills a game for Willmar. Riley Grussing had 42 assists in directing the offense.

Willmar (4-2, 4-5) owned a 20-14 lead in Game 4, but the Otters rallied to improve to 6-0 in the CLC.

"(Fergus Falls) put a really big block on us and they did a lot of things right," said Willmar coach Terrin DeBoer. "Both teams played not to lose in the fifth game and it was one of those moments where who's going to catch the momentum.

"I couldn't be happier how they played," said DeBoer of her team. "Casey (Marcus) was all over the place and they are a tough team. It stinks to lose, but it was a fun match and we played really hard."

Marcus led a superb defensive effort with 33 digs and Lindsey Atchison pocketed another 20. Hailey Vreeman had seven ace blocks and Minnick swarmed the net to collect another six.

Willmar is at St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday.
