Prep Volleyball: Cardinals top Brainerd to improve to 3-1

WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals had a season-high 26 ace blocks to snuff Brainerd in four games on Tuesday in Central Lakes volleyball.

“I think we had more blocks today than all season,” said Willmar coach Traci Grussing. “But that is something we’ve been working on. We also had some great defensive plays.”

Willmar started out winning Games 1 and 2 25-18 and 25-17; Brainerd rallied for Game 3 25-22 but the Cardinals retaliated 25-18.

Dani Rosen and Jennie Magnuson each were credited with 8 ace blocks (including assists) while Leah Ruter, McKenzie Hastad and Riley Grussing each had 3.

Rosen knocked down 14 kills with 6 errors in 30 chances. Grussing had 41 helpers and Ruter 3 ace serves.

Coach Grussing added that 83 percent serving is unacceptable and will have to improve.

Willmar stays at the top of the CLC point standings at 3-1; Brainerd dropped to 1-2.

Apollo (0-3, 0-5) is at Willmar on Thursday.
