Prep Volleyball: Martin County West clips BOLD in Section 2A final

ST. PETER — The BOLD Warriors offense seemed disconnected and by the end of the evening Saturday the defense was powerless as Martin County West laid claim to the Section 2A championship 25-22, 21-15, 25-21 and 25-10.

It was the second straight year that the Mavericks took out BOLD in the section final.

The Warriors got off to a fine start at Lund Center on the Gustavus Adolphus campus leading Game 1 22-19. The Mavericks scored the next six points to go up 1-0.

BOLD came from behind in Game 2 to win by the same 25-22 score, but from then on the Mavericks dominated.

In both Games 3 and 4, the Sherburn high school would jump out to 10-2 leads. BOLD made a nice run in Game 3, getting as close as 23-21, but long comebacks allow little margin for errors and miscues.

By Game 4 the defense was being caught flat-footed as all the momentum swung to Mavericks, who won the Valley Conference title with a 10-0 record.

Coach Leigh Snow’s Warriors (19-9) were playing in the section final a third straight year, winning the first-place trophy at St. Peter in 2011.

“It’s been great coaching these girls,” Snow said.

The Mavericks (26-6), under third-year coach Mary Sussenguth, will play No. 3 seed Southwest Minnesota Christian at 3 p.m. in the first round of the state tournament Thursday at the Xcel Center in St. Paul. Fillmore Central is No. 1 and Minneota No. 2.

Baylie Kubesh and Carly Sigurdson each managed 9 kills, but the Mavericks’ defense also forced the BOLD leaders into a combined 18 errors.
