BENSON — Minnewaska Area and Benson battled back and forth in a West Central Conference match on Thursday, with the Lakers’ edge in serving making the difference in five tough games at Benson High School.

The Lakers won 26-24, 20-25, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-13.

The upset road win improved Minnewaska’s record to 2-6 in the WCC and 7-10 overall. The Braves are now 4-5 in the conference and 6-7-1 overall.

Minnewaska made just six serves in 107 attempts.

Alison Hoeper paced the Lakers at the net with 11 kills and teammate Emma Middendorf knocked down 10 shots.

Hoeper was a sniper at the service line, with just two errors in 31 attempts and she served 5 aces.

Across the court, serving was one reason for the Braves’ downfall: They served 16 aces but also missed 15 serves and served 86 percent in 112 attempts.

“That’s uncharacteristic for us,” said Braves head coach Shannon Schmidt. “Usually we serve in the low 90s (percentage).”

Benson’s Krista Motzko finished with 13 kills and Taylor Laumeyer had 10.

Shyanne Himley recorded 5 ace serves and also had 7 kills for Benson.

The Braves play next in the seven-team Willmar tournament on Saturday.
