ALEXANDRIA -- The Willmar Cardinals rebounded from a loss to Class A Wabasso, downing a strong Alexandria team 21-25, 28-26, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12 on Thursday.

Willmar improved to 8-3 in the Central Lakes Conference and 11-8 overall. One of its three conference losses was a 3-2 defeat to Alexandria on Sept. 11.

"We played really steady," Willmar head coach Traci Grussing said. "The girls figured out what worked offensively and also what Alexandria was doing."

Emily Minnick led Willmar with 24 kills and 5 ace blocks.

Anne Dunham tacked on 10 kills and Dani Rosen had 7 kills and 4 blocking aces.

Dunham and Allie Roehl were a combined 42-for-42 serving, and Riley Grussing supplied 50 set assists.

Willmar next plays 7 p.m. Tuesday against Sartell at home.

The Braves dominated the second meeting after losing a tightly-played 3-1 loss at Minnewaska early in the season.

Benson's Emma Peterson had a big night. In Game 2 with the score tied 11-11, she served out with 8 deliveries going for aces. The 5-foot-9 senior hitter also supplied 18 kills, an ace block and 18 digs.

Benson went to 6-5 in West Central matches with two dates left. Waska fell to 8-4 and dropped into a third-place tie with BOLD.

PIERZ -- Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa clinched at least a tie for the title in the Central Minnesota Conference with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 win over Pierz on Thursday.

The Jaguars improved to 6-0 in the conference and 21-7 overall. It's the seventh consecutive year BBE has either won or tied for the conference.

Becca Gruber paced the Jaguars with 15 kills and 2 ace blocks. Brittany Roelike tacked on 14 kills and 3 service aces, and Taylor Braegelman had 7 kills and 1 ace block.
