Prep wrestling: Falcons finish with a flourish
ST. PAUL — Feelings were mixed for the Falcons after winning the Class A Consolation title at the state tournament.
“I think we could have done better,” said junior Maverick Whitcomb who started a late run of four straight victories that allowed Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City to overtake Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 28-21. “We knew we didn’t wrestle our best match against Sibley East. We probably could have been in the champion semifinals. But there’s always next year.”
But the Falcons regrouped and beat Barnesville (23-2) and then the Saints (17-4), though the match was much closer than when the teams met four weeks ago.
KMS got off to a strong start. Cody Peters’ decision at 132 put the Saints up 12-3. ACGC quickly answered with a major by Logan Peterson but the Saints were game and would lead 21-16 after wins by Zach Carlson and Jordon Rothers
That brought up the third of the Whitcomb cousins occupying the middleweights. In a tough match, Maverick scored late points to edge Austin Rothers 5-1.
ACGC’s Jacob Peterson, Lucas Damm and Jordan Fester each followed by winning a decision.
ACGC, under head coach Mike Amsden, capped an outstanding season with a sparkling 24-2 record and hardware for the hallway in Grove City.
Ten Falcons and 8 Fighting Saints are right back in action today at the two-day individual meet.
