Prep wrestling: KMS 7-for-7 in title matches

WILLMAR — The Fighting Saints muscle their way into half of the 14 championship matches at the Willmar Classic Friday and took gold in every one.
That allowed Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg to overcome the 2011 champion and host team for the team title 216 to 211.5.
The Cardinals won 4 of 5 title matches.
KMS regained the crown of the Classic it lost last year by a 252 to 224 score. The Saints have won 5 of the last 6 invites here.
Willmar sophomore Juan Resendez pin his way to the 113-pound title with sticks at 4:27, 1:30 and 4:33 in the title match.
Nick Meyer at 120 and Cody Peters at 125 picked up back-to-back titles for KMS. Austin Miley, the Classic champ at 120 a year ago, won for Willmar at 132. Travis Deegan followed with another first for Willmar at 145.
Zach Carlson of KMS, the runner-up at 138 last year, gook the 152-pound medal defeating Colten Carlson (no relation) of Willmar 11-6. Carlson was second at 145 last December in this event.
Jordan Rothers and Austin Rothers won consecutive finals for KMS at 170 and 182. Jordan also won last year at 160-pounds. Austin, who pinned his first two foes, barely got by Taylor Lundebreck of Waska 2-1 in the final.
The first-place medal run continued with Jorge Munoz-Peterson at 195 and Chase Norton at 220 taking the top step on the podium.
Willmar’s Cass Herzog had quite a day. The Cardinals heavyweight repeated but it could not have been closer. He won both matches 3-2. He beat Jason Mertens of Quad County in the final for the second Friday night in a row.
Quad County came on strong in this tournament. The pairing or RCW, MACCRAY and YME took third with Aaron Lalim at 170 pounds also finishing runner-up.
