Prep wrestling: KMS outlasts NLS
NEW LONDON — Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, ranked No. 5 in Class A, won the last three matches against Class AA’s No. 11 New London-Spicer Thursday to earn a 35-21 non-conference win.
The dual was tied three times before Jordon Rothers earned a 22-6 technical decision at 195 pounds, Chase Norton collected a 3-1 decision at 220 and Jorge Munoz-Peterson pocketed a second-period pin in the last match of the night for KMS.
The Fighting Saints won just two more matches than the Wildcats, but the visitors recorded four falls while NLS got just one, Trey Austvold’s pin at 132.
Caleb Collins at 106 and Jordan Engler at 113 won back-to-back 7-1 decisions to open the dual for KMS. Jakob Stageberg then got NLS on the scoreboard with a 5-1 decision at 120, but KMS answered with Cody Peters’ pin midway through the first period at 126.
Logan Brink at 138 and Cameron Steffen at 145 won back-to-back decisions to give NLS a short-lived 15-12 lead as a Zach Carlson pin at 152 put KMS back in front at 18-15. Jarrett Hatlestad at 160 for NLS and Karter Van Heuveln at 170 for KMS earned decisions to tie the dual at 21-21 with three matches left on the slate.
