Prep wrestling: NLS falls short in 6AA semifinals

BIG LAKE — New London-Spicer won three of the first four matches in its Section 6AA semifinal dual with Becker Friday, but the Wildcats were able to come up with just two other wins as third-seeded Becker toppled No. 3 NLS 41-22.
Tom Stageberg collected a 4-1 decision at 106 pounds and Jakob Stageberg followed with a pin late in the second period at 113 to give the Wildcats a quick 9-0 lead. Becker responded with a pin at 120, but a 12-3 major decision at 126 from Treyton Austvold and Logan Brink’s third-period pin at 138 put NLS up 19-6.
The Bulldogs then roared back and won the next four weights to take a 25-19 lead. Grant Vagle got NLS back on the scoreboard with a 5-4 decision at 182, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to 25-22, but Becker then got a major decision, decision and pin to close out the match and advance to the section final.
Top-seeded Foley then upended Becker 35-13 to win the section title. Foley thrashed No. 5 Annandale/Maple Lake 53-16 in the other semifinal Friday.
