KERKHOVEN -- New London-Spicer's upper weights broke open a tight match between two of the area's top wrestling teams and NLS defeated KMS 30-22 before a packed house in Kerkhoven.

Kyle Cappelen and Luke Gould won decisions at 170 pounds and 182 pounds to give NLS a lead, and Tanner Tobkin all but sealed the victory with a pin at 195 pounds. The Wildcats' Grant Vagle put the match out of reach with a decision at 220 pounds.

KMS took an early advantage, winning three of the first four matches on Tuesday. But Chase Austvold's pin at 132 pounds tightened the match, and Logan Brink defeated KMS' Zach Carlson 7-6 at 138 pounds in one of the better matches of the night to put the Wildcats ahead.

KMS's Jordan Rothers, the No. 2-ranked Class A wrestler at 160 pounds, won a 7-2 decision over NLS' Dylan Hanson, the No. 5 ranked Class AA 160-pounder, to help KMS regain the lead briefly.
