Prep wrestling: Wildcats take out Warriors behind 5 pins
NEW LONDON — A six-match win streak early in its non-conference dual with BOLD Tuesday and Brandon Knisley’s pin at heavyweight propelled New London-Spicer past the Warriors 40-32.
Brady Zitzman earned a 12-0 major decision at 106 pounds to give BOLD four early points, but the Wildcats then collected six straight wins — four by pin — to take a comfortable 34-4 lead.
BOLD forfeited to Jakob Stageberg at 113 and following that was Tom Stageberg collecting a first-period pin at 120, Oden Rogers grinding out a 13-5 major decision, and Treyton Austvold at 132, Logan Eckhoff at 138 and Logan Brink at 145 picking up back-to-back-to-back pins for NLS, which is rated No. 9 in the latest Class AA poll put out by The Guillotine.
BOLD then won six straight matches of its own to make things interesting, but two decisions and a major decision down the stretch wasn’t enough for the visiting Warriors to overtake NLS.
Martin Minkel at 182 and Trevor Nissen at 220 notched pins, Chaz Roush at 152 and Joel Erickson at 195 decions and Ben Steffel at 160 a major decision for BOLD, which picked up six points at 170 when NLS forfeited to Alex Hatch.
Knisley then sealed the win by collecting a pin midway through the first period.
