CASS LAKE — Willmar finished second and had nine wrestlers place at the Big Bear Invite on Friday and Saturday in Cass Lake.

The Cardinals’ team score of 170.5 trailed only Hutchinson’s 199.

Willmar’s Austin Miley (132), Estevan Navarro (145), Travis Deegan (152), Colten Carlson (160) and Vaughn Johnson (182) all finished third in their weight classes.

“This is the most placings we’ve ever had at this tournament,” Willmar head coach Ed Oehlers said. “It was a great competition. The guys wrestled awesome.”

Matt Hennes (220) and Logan Walkow (126) took fourth-place finishes.

Juan Resendez (120) took fifth and Jacob Bollig (113) sixth.

The Cardinals are off until Jan. 2 when they host St. Cloud Tech.

MAHACA also wrestled in the tournament, finishing 16th.

The Tigers’ Travis Ostby finished fourth at 132 and Dillan Johnson was sixth at 145.

River Riot

Zach Carlson won the 170-pound championship to help KMS to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Redwood River Riot wrestling tournament in Redwood Falls.

The United team comprised of Dawson-Boyd, Lac qui Parle Valley and Montevideo wrestlers placed third.

Sibley East won the meet followed by Maple River.
