Prep wrestling: Willmar beats back Brainerd

WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals mowed down Brainerd 33-27 winning 8 of 14 matches on Thursday night.
That upped the Cardinals’ Central Lakes record to 2-0 while, coupled with the win over Apollo on Tuesday, avenged both of their league losses last season.
All of the extra bonus points helped out Willmar. Three Cardinal losses were by decision.
Colten Carlson moved up from 152.
The Cardinals won 6 of 7 matches starting at 113 with a pin by Juan Resendez.
Colton Carlson moved up two weight to wrestle at 170 where he won a decision for a 30-12 lead.
Brainerd rallied with a decision and two pins to close to 30-27.
That left it up to heavyweight Cass Herzog. In a match of two bullish seniors, Herzog prevailed 7-5.
Bonus wins by Logan Walkow, Zach Lueders, and Travis Deegan also helped provide the winning margin.
Appropriately, the victory over Brainerd came on 1998 Alumni Night which honored Willmar’s 1998 State Tournament team. It finished 6-1 in the CLC, the only loss 37-18 to the Warriors. The ’97-98 team, coached by Tom Beyer, finished 17-4 going 1-2 in at State.
