Preparing for the big day: Veterans Day 2013
Raymond: All veterans and their spouses are invited to the potluck Veterans Day supper at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Raymond Community Center. A ladies barbershop quarter will present a musical program. Raymond’s 2012 Girls and Boys Staters, Hailey Boonstra and Ransom Dykema, will report on their experiences. Bring a dish to share. Beverages and utensils will be provided.
Willmar: A free Veterans Day breakfast will be served from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sterling House in Willmar. All local veterans and their spouses are welcome.
Benson: A Veterans Day program will begin at 9:35 a.m. Monday at the Benson Senior High School gym. Gen. Joseph Kelly, Assistant Adjutant General to the State of Minnesota, retired, will be the speaker. He is originally from Olivia and is currently working for the State Deputy Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.Willmar: A free Veterans Day dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the American Legion in Willmar. Provided and prepared by local veterans and friends of veterans.Grove City: The Grove City Area Historical Society will be honoring veterans from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday at Southgrove by the museum. Refreshments will be served.Willmar: A display of military items from the Civil War through the present will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Nov. 13 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Willmar. The collection of Jon Lindstrand of Kandiyohi along with the New Ulm Battery’s original Civic War brass cannon will be on display in the auditorium.There will be a program at 7:30 p.m. Monday with Maj. Gen. Jerry Lang, Deputy Commanding General Army National Guard, as the speaker.The West Central Connection men’s chorus will provide music for the program.The Blue Star Mothers of Minnesota, Chapter 1, will be on hand all three days sharing what their organization does to help deployed troops overseas. They will be collecting items (snacks, toiletries, puzzle books, etc.) for their care packages and have many patriotic items for sale.Vietnam War veteran and author Ron Mackedanz will be in attendance most of the time and will have copies of his book “Drafted” available.
