“I’m looking forward to it, but I’ve been part of this community for 15 years, so there’s a lot of mixed emotions,” Cox said Friday.

Cox’s new school serves nearly 500 students in grades K-6, including the district’s autism program and its gifted-and-talented program. He said he looks forward to the different challenges of the new job.

He was Roosevelt’s dean of students for six years before becoming principal. Before that he taught in the New London-Spicer School District.

Roosevelt has seen many changes in recent years. It moved from a 5-6 building to a 4-6 building to a K-5 building in the past decade. The school currently has more than 900 students.

Cox’s wife, Traci, teaches communications at Willmar Senior High. They have three children. She is a graduate of Willmar schools.

The new job opportunity “is opening the door to some other career opportunities for my wife and I,” Cox said. They will also be living near family in Stillwater.

“I have felt humbled to be in this position,” Cox said, and he has enjoyed working with the students and staff at Roosevelt.
