Rain to turn into snow tonight in west central Minnesota

Rain is expected to change into snow across southern Minnesota this morning and then spread northward into central Minnesota this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

One to 3 inches of snow accumulation tonight is forecast for west central and central Minnesota.

More snow - 4 to 6 inches - is forecast across south central Minnesota and then northeast over the Twin Cities and into Wisconsin.

The snow will diminish on Wednesday with only light accumulations.

The extended forecast for the Willmar area is:

Today: Rain and snow likely after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 44. East wind between 11 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight: Snow. Low around 29. Northeast wind between 6 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of snow before 1 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 41. North northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 28. West northwest wind at 8 mph becoming south.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of rain after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 49. South southeast wind between 7 and 16 mph.

Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 35.

Friday: A chance of rain and snow before 10 a.m., then a chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 46. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Friday Night: A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 51.
