NORTHFIELD - Savannah Ramirez of Litchfield and Ben Burgett of Community Christian, Willmar, were the top finishers from the Tribune coverage area Saturday morning at the Class A Cross-Country meet.

Ramirez finished seventh in her third state meet dropping her time to under 15 minutes in the 4k for the first time. Burgett, a sophomore, placed 33rd in a field of 175 in the boys 5k. He chopped 30 seconds off his time of a year ago here.

Perham won the boys team title placing 5 runners in the top 12 to defeat runner-up St. Cloud Cathedral 37-72.

Three Montevideo runners in the boys race were near or below their personal bests. Zac Enevoldson placed 71, Ryan Maroney 77 and Joseph Varpness 103.

Esko took the girls trophy with the Annandale Cardinals in second. Blake School junior Clare Flanagan repeated as individual champion in a sizzling time of 14:04. Ramirez crossed the finish in 14:47, three seconds out of fifth.

Alaysia Freetly of Lac qui Parle/Dawson-Boyd earned all-state honors placing 19th. Makenzie Smith of Morris/Chokio-Alberta finished 31st.

Conditions were cool - low 40s with a few snowflakes during the boys 10 a.m. race - but calm so an altogether pleasant morning for such an activity on what is also the opening day of the firearms deer season.
