RAYMOND -- Community leaders from Raymond touted their vibrant economic health during a meeting conducted here Thursday by the Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Commission.

The EDC has been holding meetings in towns throughout the county as a way to learn about the economy of the community and how the EDC could help address needs.

Raymond is on the county's most western edge.

Larry Macht, president of the Raymond Civic and Commerce Committee, said Raymond is the "best kept secret" in Kandiyohi County.

Citing the 2010 census, Macht said nearly one-third of the town's population is under the age of 18.

The city is working with the EDC on a proposal for an assisted living facility for senior citizens, which make up another large percentage of the town's residents.

Macht said many of the town's residents work in Willmar but they choose to live in Raymond because of the "quality of life."

Macht said there are only two houses for sale in Raymond and every commercial building is occupied.

It was acknowledged that perhaps that unusual feat was achieved because there are not a lot of commercial buildings in town.

But Macht said the town is "very fortunate" to have a full business community, including relatively new commercial buildings that were constructed after a fire in the mid-1970s and after heavy snow demolished nearly a block of buildings in 1997.

He said those disasters may have ultimately benefited the town.

"We've risen from the ashes and taken advantage of it," said Macht, adding that the town's business people also have a reputation of providing dependable "quality service" that's part of the town's success.

That success has lasted 125 years.

The town is celebrating its quasquicentennial during a community celebration Aug. 23-24.

More information about the celebration and the community can be found at the town's website: www.raymondminnesota.com
