Readers warned to watch for scam targeting West Central Tribune subscribers
Willmar Minnesota 2208 Trott Ave. SW / P.O. Box 839 56201

WILLMAR -- Readers of the West Central Tribune appear to be the target of a scam of a fraudulent marketing company seeking credit card numbers.

According to Mark Herman, circulation director for the Tribune, citizens are receiving phone calls during which they are asked to subscribe to the newspaper and need to give a credit card number. The so-called company name is "Verifast."

However, the Tribune does not outsource any circulation telemarketing calling and no other company is authorized to sell subscriptions to the West Central Tribune.

"We don't outsource any of our selling," Herman said. "If someone else calls, it is a scam."

During real call from the Tribune, the caller will identify themselves by name and state they are calling from the Tribune. Readers are offered two payment options, a price for which they will be billed and a pre-paid price, which is offered at a discount, Herman said.

As of Monday morning, several citizens have called the Tribune office regarding the scam.

The West Central Tribune has reported these circulation scam calls to law enforcement.
