District Court

Kandiyohi County

* Jeremiah James Schmeichel, 32, of Willmar, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony stalking charge.

As part of a plea agreement, a misdemeanor for disorderly conduct will be dismissed. He will be sentenced Nov. 15.

The charges were filed after Kandiyohi County sheriff's deputies were called Jan. 20 to Lakeview Drive in Spicer. A woman there reported that Schmeichel had been watching her and that he had quickly approached a vehicle she was in and confronted a man she was with, trying to fight with the man.

The woman told a deputy that she had told Schmeichel to leave her alone, but that in the past two weeks, he had invited her to an event and to help put up curtains in his apartment and had given her a Christmas present.

According to a psychologist's report in the court file, Schmeichel has a long history of mental illness and was in the Woodland Center crisis center before he signed himself out.

Schmeichel has a prior conviction for fifth-degree assault in October 2007 in Lyon County.

* Zeppelin Michael Peterson, 21, of Willmar, was sentenced Tuesday to five years of probation, 90 days in jail, $100 in fines and $7,215.81 in restitution on pleaded guilty to one felony and one misdemeanor charge of property damage, plus two counts of misdemeanor fifth-degree assault for damaging property and threatening clients and staff at the boys' group home for Prairie Lakes Youth Programs and damaging property at Matthew House in Willmar.

As part of a plea agreement, another felony for property damage, for damaging furnishings at Rice Memorial Hospital, was dismissed.

According to the Prairies Lakes complaint, a Willmar police officer was called around 6:40 p.m. June 29 to the group home, along Lakeland Drive Northeast, on a report that someone was causing damage at the home. The officer arrived to find Peterson holding a rock over his head, attempting to smash a car window. He was taken into custody.

A staff member reported that Peterson had also broken several windows with rocks and landscaping bricks, thrown a shovel at a staff member and dented the door of a car with a shovel.

Peterson's other property damage charge was filed after June 23, when he damaged furnishings in the Rice Institute for Counseling and Education unit at Rice Hospital. Staff there had been working with Peterson, who had tipped over computer monitors, a television, tables and chairs and damaged a coffeemaker and bookcase.

The misdemeanor property damage charge was filed after officers were called to Matthew House, 619 Trott Avenue Southwest, regarding a suicidal man. They arrived to find Peterson outside of the home. Peterson entered the house and damaged items, including tipping over a freezer and breaking furniture and dishes.
