Meeker Co. Sheriff seeking information about power pole fire
LITCHFIELD — Anyone with information about the attempted theft of copper from a power pole near Watkins is asked to contact the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Sheriff Jeff Norlin, his department received a report around 6:15 p.m. Thursday of a power pole on fire at the intersection of State Highway 55 and 657th Avenue in Forest Prairie Township.
A deputy and the Watkins Fire Department responded to the scene and found that there was a fire at the base of the pole that had burned out on its own.
Meeker Co-op Light and Power Association personnel also responded and discovered that someone had attempted to remove the copper ground wire from the old power pole causing the wire to snap and come in contact with a live wire and caused the fire. The value of the damage is unknown at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
Anyone who sees suspicious persons or vehicles around power poles, substations, abandoned farm sites or radio towers is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office. You can remain anonymous by calling the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 1-866-333-3366 or a crime stoppers tip text to “TIP674 plus your message” (274637).
