Meeker County seeks assistance in tracking down daytime thieves
LITCHFIELD — A series of daytime burglaries has Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin asking for the public’s help to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles and persons.
Grant, Stevens, Pope, Douglas and Kandiyohi counties have had more than 30 reports of daytime burglaries. On Jan. 9 Meeker County had a burglary that occurred in the mid-morning hours on County Road 2 in Forest City Township, and it appears to be the same suspect as in the other counties.
Meeker County investigators have determined the majority of the burglaries have taken place during the daytime when people are at work or otherwise not home.
A person of interest and type of vehicle has also been developed that includes a charcoal or dark gray colored extended cab or four-door pickup, with a Caucasian male in his early to mid-30s, or possibly older.
When this person has come to an occupied home, he has asked if they want their driveways plowed; however, the truck does not have a snowplow.
The person speaks with a Southern accent and was seen wearing a baseball cap and a brown jacket, possibly a Carhartt.
Anyone who sees a person or vehicle matching this description or any other suspicious activity should contact authorities.
Theft
WILLMAR — Police were forced to intervene Sunday with a woman who had found a smartphone at Wal-Mart but refused to give back to the owner unless she got a reward.
According to the initial police report, a 28-year old Blomkest woman told police she had lost her phone and had been getting calls from a Willmar woman who had found the phone but was demanding a reward.
Police warned the finder that she could be charged with theft if she refused to hand the phone over. After she still refused, the officer took the phone from the woman and returned it to the rightful owner.
