Juvenile bombers were experimenting
WILLMAR — Three teens from Willmar were apparently experimenting, and didn’t intend to cause harm, when they blew up a homemade bomb Saturday night in a bank parking lot in Willmar.
But the three could still face charges.
Evidence was gathered at the scene and sent to the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.
A 19-year-old man, a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl could face charges of possession of explosives or incendiary devices and liability for crimes of another, according to Willmar police.
Plainclothes police officers “heard and felt” the impact of the bomb just before midnight in the 300 block of First Street South.
The officers, who were from the department’s gang task force, found the three individuals in the parking lot of Heritage Bank.
They also discovered chemicals and other items used for making the bomb, which is sometimes referred to as a MacGyver bomb from the television show “MacGyver” that aired in the 1980s and 1990s.
They reportedly told officers they did not intend to cause property damage or harm anyone but were experimenting to see if they could make an explosion.
