Fires

LITCHFIELD — Five acres of corn stubble near Dassel were scorched Friday afternoon after a controlled burn got out of hand.

The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office and Dassel Fire and Rescue responded at 2:24 p.m. after being notified that the fire, which had been set by a landowner to burn a ditch, had jumped across to a neighbor’s field. Winds were fanning the flames toward some buildings.

The Dassel Fire Department extinguished the blaze. Five acres of a previously harvested cornfield were burned but no other damage was reported.

The fire is under investigation by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrests

WILLMAR — Two suspects were arrested in connection with a fight reported shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday at the Caribbean Club.

The suspects are a 34-year-old man from Union City, Tenn., and a 26-year-old man from Grove City.

The victim, a 34-year-old Willmar man, was not seriously injured.

WILLMAR — Willmar Police have a 24-year-old man in custody for trying to flee two officers who approached him early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. Sunday while the officers were on patrol in Regency Estates East. According to a police report, the officers spotted the suspect, recognized him as having an active warrant for his arrest, and tried to stop him by identifying themselves as police and calling him by name.

The suspect reportedly then ran into a trailer and refused to come out. Several assisting officers arrived on the scene. After calling several times for the suspect to come out, officers forced their way into the trailer and took the suspect into custody.

NEW LONDON — A 50-year-old Hawick man faces several charges following a one-vehicle crash Friday night in New London.

The suspect allegedly hit some power lines at the corner of Second Avenue Northeast and Dogwood Street, then left the scene. Pending charges include hit and run, DWI and open container.

Thefts

KANDIYOHI — An entire furnace was reported stolen Saturday from a house on 90th Street Southeast in rural Kandiyohi.

The furnace, which was new, was removed from the basement sometime between Friday night and Saturday. The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office is investigating..
