This is the records summary for Dec. 6. Crash near Clara City kills Marshall woman CLARA CITY — A Marshall woman was killed Thursday near Clara City in a head-on crash with a semi that had jack-knifed on state Highway 23.

The State Patrol said Debra Griebel, 60, was killed in the crash reported shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday on Highway 23, just north of state Highway 7.

Griebel was southbound on Highway 23 and a semi driven by YaYa Zongo, 39, of Dallas, Texas, was northbound on Highway 23.

The patrol said Zongo lost control of the vehicle, which jack-knifed and collided with the 2001 Chevy Malibu driven by Griebel. The road was icy at the time.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Clara City Police Department, Chippewa County Medical Center Ambulance, Rice Air Care, Willmar Ambulance and Clara City Fire Department assisted the patrol.

Theft WILLMAR — Willmar police received a report Thursday of the theft of two car seats from a car parked in the 1400 block of 14th Avenue Northeast. The theft occurred during the early morning hours of Nov. 30.

District Court Kandiyohi County * Samuel Lee Berends, 21, of Willmar, made his first appearance Friday on a felony charge of offering a forged check for his role in cashing a check forged on another person’s account.

Unconditional bail was set at $5,000. His next appearance is Dec. 16.

Berends is one of four people charged in the case. Stanley Gutierrez, 23, of St. Cloud, faces two felonies for check forgery. His next appearance is Jan. 29. Omar Escalante and Oscar Escalante, both 23, of Renville, are each charged with one felony for check forgery and each has a warrant for their arrest.

According to the complaint, the investigation began when Renville police reported to Willmar police that a Renville man had reported checks forged on his account had been cashed at two Willmar businesses. Berends was identified as one of four people who had forged a total of $5,150 on checks between Oct. 5 and 13 at the two businesses.
