NEW LONDON ––  The Minnesota State Patrol has identified the victim of a fatal car crash that occurred earlier this month as Burton Van Ort, 88, of New London.

Van Ort was injured in an accident on April 17 when the vehicle he was driving collided with a semi at the intersection of state Highway 23 and Kandiyohi County Road 40, near New London.

Van Ort died April 21 as a result of injuries from the crash.

His wife, Ella Van Ort, 88, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi, Jamie LaBat, 39, of Marshall, was not injured.

According to the State Patrol, Van Ort was going east on County Road 40 and entered the northbound lane of traffic on Highway 23 when it collided with the trailer of the semi.

The accident happened around 11 p.m. The roads were dry at the time.

Alcohol was not detected in either of the drivers.

Vehicles damaged by fire at Ridgewater College overnight; suspicious cause

WILLMAR — Several vehicles, including a former Kandiyohi Area Transit bus, were damaged in a fire reported just before 1 a.m. Friday morning at Ridgewater College.

According to Willmar Fire Chief Gary Hendrickson, firefighters were called to the college on a report of a bus and building on fire and arrived to discover that just the bus was involved in the blaze.

However, the fire spread to three other vehicles around the bus, which was parked near a fenced-in vehicle storage area on the campus, Hendrickson said. One of the vehicles damaged was a demonstration vehicle used to show how airbags work.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is potentially suspicious, Hendrickson said. The value of the vehicles was undetermined and the case remains under investigation.

Fire crews were on the scene for about an hour.
