When the deputy arrived he found a 1997 Jeep engulfed in flames but no driver at the scene. It was determined that the vehicle, registered to Donna Denny, 51, of Atwater, was a total loss. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
SOUTH HAVEN — A wood-burning stove used to heat rocks in a sauna was the apparent cause of a small structure fire at 32067 748th Ave., South Haven, the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office said.The owner, Gary Mansicka, 72, of South Haven, reported at 8:32 p.m. Saturday that his 10-foot by 18-foot free-standing sauna was on fire. The sauna was valued at $20,000 and was a total loss. No other buildings were damaged.NEW MUNICH — A dairy barn located just off Interstate 94 at the New Munich exit was damaged by fire, but the 42 cows inside the barn were safety removed Saturday evening, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said.Firefighters from Freeport and Melrose found flames coming out of the roof of the 40-foot by 120-foot barn owned by Luverne Hinnenkamp of Melrose and rented by Kevin Bauer of Melrose.Due to the proximity to Interstate 94, Minnesota State Patrol troopers were dispatched to assist with traffic control along with Stearns County deputies. The Melrose Ambulance was dispatched and transported one firefighter to the Melrose Hospital after the firefighter was struck in the head by falling debris.The fire departments transported water from Melrose and were on scene for over 4 hours. The barn and dairy equipment were insured and the fire remains under investigation.
Driver charged with reckless drivingWILLMAR — Willmar Police charged Jamie Marie Zenker, 31 of Willmar with reckless driving and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident after the 2005 Chevy that police said Zenker was driving struck two bicyclists and a parked pickup truck Saturday afternoon.The incident occurred at 1:02 p.m. at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and Charlotte Street Southeast. Police said Zenker was having an argument with her boyfriend, Franky Torres, 27, of Willmar, who was on a bicycle.Police said Zenker made a U-turn and claims she hit the gas instead of the brake and struck Torres and Jacob Espelien, 13, of Willmar who was also on a bike. Zenker then struck a parked 1994 Chevy pickup at 525 Charlotte St. and owned by Neil Evans.Police said the bicyclists received minor injuries but were not transported to Rice Hospital.———
