Two hurt in Meeker County crash

COSMOS — Two people were taken to Meeker Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash around 4:30 p.m. Thursday near Cosmos.

According to the State Patrol and the Meeker County Sheriff’s office, Casey Schaup, 52, of Madison Lake, was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy north on State Highway 4. Jason McCarthy, 24, of Cosmos, was driving a 1999 Dodge Ram west on 180th Street when the two vehicles collided at the intersection.

Schaup and a passenger in his vehicle, Robert Armstrong, 46, of Eagle Lake, were transported by Cosmos Ambulance. McCarthy was not injured.

The State Patrol is investigating the crash. Also responding was the Cosmos Fire Department.


SPICER — A Boy Scout Blazer trailer, red in color, was reported stolen from an address in the 100 block of Access Drive in Spicer. The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office investigated.

Fraud attempt

RAYMOND — The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a rural Raymond resident of attempted fraud over the phone Thursday. The complainant said a male caller with an accent that sounded like someone from India said his name was Peter Spenser, gave a number as 202-864-1728 and that he represented the IRS. The caller said the complainant’s wife owed money to the IRS. The complainant said no information was given, according to the report to the sheriff’s office.

District Court, Kandiyohi County

- Denise Marie Remkus, 34, of Clara City, pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony charge of driving while impaired for driving a vehicle that was involved in a property damage crash at a Willmar apartment complex and then stopped by law officers in downtown Willmar.

As part of a plea agreement, another felony count, plus a gross misdemeanor charge of driving after cancelation – inimical to public safety and a misdemeanor charge of failure to stop for a property damage crash, will be dismissed. She will be sentenced July 24.

According to the court file, Remkus has three prior convictions for driving while impaired in November 2004, December 2005 and September 2010, all in Dakota County.

The charges were filed after March 31, when both the Willmar Police Department and the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s office responded around 11:40 a.m. to a report from the caretaker of an apartment complex along Becker Avenue Southeast that a vehicle had crashed into a garage door and the drove away. The caretaker followed the vehicle into the downtown area, where it was stopped by the police who smelled alcohol and saw signs of impairment in the driver, identified as Remkus.

 She admitted to drinking large cups of vodka and held onto the vehicle to keep from falling down. A preliminary breath test showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.312. She was arrested and a breath test at the Law Enforcement Center showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.25. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.
