District Court

Kandiyohi County

- Mari Jo Besser, 28, of Atwater, made her first appearance Thursday on a felony charge of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult for allegedly inducing a vulnerable adult to loan her money and write bad checks for her benefit.

She was released on her personal recognizance and ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim. Her next appearance is Nov. 9.

According to the complaint, Kandiyohi County Family Services reported to the Willmar police in July that a 27-year-old female vulnerable adult had been exploited by Besser. The allegations include that Besser induced the woman to get a $1,000 loan for her benefit and to write checks on insufficient funds at Cash Wise Foods. The total exploited is allegedly $1,960.56.
