Watkins man hurt Friday in tractor-train crash

The sheriff 's office received a call at 9:05 a.m. to the crash at a private crossing located one-quarter mile east of Watkins. Deputies determined a model 8930 Case IH tractor driven by Libbesmeier was traveling southbound on a field road and was crossing the railroad tracks at a field crossing.

A Canadian Pacific train traveling eastbound at approximately 40 mph approached the crossing and struck the tractor as it began to cross the tracks, causing extensive damage to the tractor. The farm tractor was towing a manure spreader.

The impact sheared off the front of the tractor just ahead of the cab. The tractor, valued at $80,000, is a total loss. The lead engine on the train was damaged but a dollar amount has not been determined at this time, the Sheriff 's Office said in a news release.

Libbesmeier was transported by a family member to the Paynesville Hospital for treatment. Canadian Pacific railroad personnel reported no injuries.

The Sheriff 's Office reminds citizens to use due care whenever crossing railroad tracks. A train traveling at only 40 mph is traveling a distance of nearly 60 feet per second. A train that is seen a block away will arrive at the crossing in a matter of seconds.

Theft

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Police Department investigated the break-in and theft of items from a 1998 Chevrolet parked in the 1200 block of 19th Avenue Southeast. The theft was reported Friday. An older model Sony CD player that doesn't work was taken from the center dash. Also taken were Concord Bank and Home State Bank debit cards, driver's license, medical card, other identification and a wallet. Someone also entered a nearby 2008 Chrysler but nothing was reported missing.

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Fire Department was called at 2:19 p.m. Friday to Waters Edge Apartments, 420 30th St. N.W., where burned food on the stove was the cause of smoke but no fire. Firefighters exhausted the smoke and were on the scene for 20 minutes.
