Man critically injured after fiery crash in Yellow Medicine County
CLARKFIELD -- A Clarkfield man was critically injured when his vehicle collided with another car and then burst into flames Monday night in Yellow Medicine County.
Ryan Bruns, 29, was injured when the 1998 Dodge Stratus he was driving collided with a 2005 Buick LaCrosse driven by Gloria Piipke, 69, of Minneota.
The broadside-type accident happened around 9 p.m. at the intersection of state Highway 67 and County Road 9, west of Clarkfield.
According to the State Patrol, Bruns was going east on Highway 67 and Piipke was traveling south on County Road 9 when their vehicles collided. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch and Bruns' vehicle then started on fire.
He was taken to the Dawson Hospital and was listed in critical condition.
Piipke was treated and released for injuries at Dawson Hospital
The Clarkfield ambulance and fire department and the Dawson ambulance service also responded to the scene.
Two hospitalized after crash near Silver Lake
SILVER LAKE -- A Cokato teen and a Montevideo man are hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash around 9:45 p.m. Monday along State Highway 7 west of Silver Lake.
According to the State Patrol, Samantha J. Van De Steeg, 16, of Cokato, and Caleb O. Cochrane, 24, of Montevideo, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Both were drivers of the vehicles involved in a sideswipe-type crash.
A passenger in Cochrane's vehicle, Linda A. Cochrane, 62, of Montevideo, was treated and released at Hutchinson Hospital.
Also responding were the Silver Lake fire, police and ambulance, along with the McLeod County Sheriff's office.
Two to Paynesville Hospital after semi-pickup crash
ST. MARTIN -- Two Paynesville residents were taken by ambulance to Paynesville Hospital after a two-vehicle crash around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday about a mile south of St. Martin along County Road 32.
According to the Stearns County Sheriff's office, Calvin Michael Weber, 20, and his passenger, Damaris Annie Toney, 18, were in a 1993 Ford Ranger that collided with a 1995 International semi truck driven by Jason Michael Kolb, 24, of Richmond. The semi pulled out of a driveway in front of the pickup.
The crash remains under investigation.
WILLMAR -- Damage to a window screen was reported around 1 p.m. Monday along Park Avenue West. Someone had cut the screen, but no entry was gained into the home.
WILLMAR -- Damage to a window was reported around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday along the 1300 block of 24th Street Northwest.
WILLMAR -- Damage to two clothes dryers and the possible theft of money from within was reported around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday along the 400 block of 16th Avenue Southwest.
WILLMAR -- A home burglary was reported around 8 p.m. Monday along the 900 block of 13th Street Southwest. Someone cut the screen on an unlocked window and entered the home, but nothing was missing. The incident was believed to have happened early Sunday morning.
WILLMAR -- The theft of a checkbook and credit cards was reported around 10 p.m. Monday along the 1200 block of 13th Avenue Southwest.
WILLMAR -- The theft of pumpkins was reported around 1 a.m. Tuesday along the 600 block of First Street South. As many as 16 squash were missing from a garden patch.
WILLMAR -- Three people, a 19-year-old man, a 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy were cited for domestic assault around 6:20 p.m. Monday along Fourth Street Southeast.
WILLMAR -- Two 16-year-old boys were cited for disorderly conduct around 6:10 p.m. Monday after police were called to a fight at the corner of First Street and Trott Avenue.
- Justin Lee Gomez, 22, of Willmar, made his first appearance Monday on five felony charges of criminal sexual conduct, second-degree assault, domestic assault by strangulation, domestic assault and terroristic threats for allegedly assaulting a woman Sunday morning.
Unconditional bail was set at $225,000 with conditional bail at $125,000. He makes his next appearance Oct. 25. Gomez also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of child endangerment.
According to the complaint, Willmar Police were called around 4:30 a.m. to an apartment in the southeast quadrant of the city on a domestic assault. A woman, who had a relationship and three children with Gomez, reported she had been assaulted. She had visible injuries to her face and neck. She said that Gomez had hit, punched and strangled her and kept her in a bedroom for two hours as he threatened her life. He had also pushed her down as she held a small child. She later reported that he'd also sexually assaulted her.
The woman was eventually able to get away from Gomez, who had also fled the apartment. He was located and arrested and declined to talk to officers. He has two prior convictions for assault this year.
