- Anthony Maurice Gorman, 45, of Atwater, made his first appearance Tuesday on a felony charge of domestic assault.
Unconditional bail was set at $15,000 with conditional release allowed for $500. His next appearance is April 6.
According to the complaint, two Kandiyohi County Sheriff's deputies were called around 4:45 a.m. Sunday to a rural Atwater address on a domestic. A woman there said she had had an argument with Gorman and it turned physical. She said he had slammed her head into the floor and stuffed a toy into her mouth. Officers found Gorman hiding in the bathroom and he was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital for treatment because he had ingested drain cleaner.
A review of his criminal history includes a December 2008 conviction for interfering with a 911 call and an April 2007 conviction for third-degree assault.
- Samantha Jo Johnson, 19, of Willmar, pleaded guilty Tuesday to an amended charge of gross misdemeanor theft for taking merchandise from a Kandi Mall retailer, returning it for a credit that she then used to purchase items for herself.
As part of a plea agreement, the charge was reduced from a felony and she agreed to pay restitution in the case.
The charge was filed after Willmar police were called Dec. 8 to Herberger's in the mall in Willmar on a case of employee theft. Loss prevention personnel said that Johnson was making no-receipt returns by taking items off the sales floor, returning them and getting a merchandise credit. She then used the credit to purchase items for herself. Officers spoke with Johnson, who admitted to the activity and said she had been doing it since Thanksgiving. Officers went with Johnson to her apartment, where she turned over items that were purchased with the stolen credit. A review of transactions showed transactions from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, totaling $1,830.68.
- Alicia Ann Myers, 20, of Windom, was sentenced Tuesday to five years of probation, 76 days in jail and 200 hours of community service on a felony charge of receiving stolen property for possessing a stolen vehicle.
As part of a plea agreement, she received a stay of imposition on her sentence. She was given credit for 76 days already served in jail and was ordered to write a letter of apology.
The charges were filed after a Willmar police officer was dispatched on Nov. 2 to the 1600 block of Ninth Street Southwest to investigate a stolen vehicle. The officer noted that the vehicle, a 2007 Chevy Aveo, was parked in front of the home. The vehicle had been reported stolen on Oct. 24. Myers said she took her mother's car, with permission, to come to Willmar for a few days with her boyfriend. She admitted that a friend in Redwood Falls had advised her that the car was reported stolen. She was arrested on the local charges and charges of motor vehicle theft and theft by swindle in Cottonwood County.
