LITCHFIELD — Nearby hunters are being credited for helping save three men whose boat capsized on a Meeker County lake while duck hunting Friday morning.

The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office said the men’s boat apparently capsized while they were retrieving ducks, sending two of them into the water. A third man was able to hang onto the boat, the Sheriff’s Office said. The boat was about 200 yards from shore on Lake Washington, southeast of Litchfield.

The three hunters were identified as Jacob Schiller, 26, of Glencoe, and Thomas Jansick, 25, and Tyler Duenow, 27, both of Hutchinson.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the three men called for help for several minutes before a pair of hunters heard them and responded. Alex Mareness, 20, of Eagan, and Dustin Lang, 19, of Hutchinson, helped the three duck hunters out of the cold water, retrieved as many of their personal effects as they could find, and assisted in getting them safely to a boat landing.

The incident was reported to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office shortly after 7 a.m. Friday.

The three hunters declined medical attention. They sustained about $3,800 in losses, both in personal items and in damage to their boat.
