The bus was bound for Red Lake Elementary School. Superintendent Brent Gish says the bus driver investigated Friday after noticing something unusual about the student's position.

The driver took the rifle away and removed it from the bus.

Gish says the student's parents were called, as were the police department and family services.

Gish didn't know whether the student was taken into custody.

He says the student's family told him the rifle wasn't loaded.
