Regal, Starbuck open Cornbelt North with wins

REGAL -- Chris Beier gave up a pair of runs in the second inning, then settled down and retired 17 straight batters and Regal went on to upend Paynesville 4-2 in a Cornbelt North playoff game on Sunday.

Paynesville scored its runs on a walk, an Adam Miller double, an Adam Hemmesch RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

Shane Radermacher's single scored Austin Hadley, who had doubled, to make it 2-1 through six. The Eagles got three in the bottom of the seventh with Jordan Beier's two-run double the key swing.

Trent Hanson's single broke up Chris Beier's streak of 17 straight outs, but Austin Hadley came in to get the last five Pirates for the save.

Regal next will host Starbuck on Sunday in the winner's bracket.

Starbuck 7, NL-Spicer 4

The Stars beat the Twins for the first time after losing both meetings in the regular season.

Zach Lagred went 4-for-4 for Starbuck with a double and two RBI. Ryan Gandrud and Aaron Kessler also delivered two hits apiece in a 10-hit attack.

New London-Spicer, which does not play again until Aug. 1, couldn't make much out of six hits and the 10 walks it got off Joe Heidelberger.

The loss went to Darren Ogdahl, who pitched into the seventh before Ryan Speltz relieved and struggled through the last three innings giving up two hits and walking five.

Russ Nathe, Chris Thompson and Toby Chellin each homered among Litchfield's 17 hits.

Thompson finished 3-for-5, while Nathe, Chellin, Lucas Johnson and Joe Buschette had two hits each.

Chris Sundmark picked up the win on the mound, tossing six innings and giving up six hits and an unearned run. He walked one and struck out seven.
