Renville County adopts 'green' theme for government week

OLIVIA -- Renville County will observe national government week by hosting a series of noon luncheons with presentations on "green' topics for students and the public.

People are welcome to join the luncheons planned May 4 through 8 at the County Office Building in Olivia. Lunch will be available for a donation to Relay for Life- United Farm Credit Service Team, or guests are welcome to brown bag it too.

Join for any of these noon events:

Monday: Renville County Energy Challenge Kick Off - Learn about home and business energy audits, energy efficiency improvements, rebates and tax credits, and community involvement. Guest speakers include Cecilia Alvarez - Entrepreneurs Assistance Network; Bruce Bremseth - Dirks Furniture; Sara Folsted - Renville County Administrator, Ed Stone - Community Earth Councils.

Tuesday: Greening your home - Learn about the three R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, How-to Dispose of Hazardous Products in Your Home and Non-toxic Cleaning Kits & Recipes. Guest speaker is Diane Mitchell, coordinator of the Renville County Household and Hazardous Waste. Attendees will receive a reusable shopping bag.

Wednesday: Green Hour - No Child Left Inside - Parents and caregivers will learn ways to help the entire family enjoy outdoor experiences and backyard adventures. Guest speakers include Jill Bruns and Polly Ahrens, Renville County Public Health.

Thursday: Renville County Outdoor Recreational Opportunities - Learn more about upcoming Tatanka Bluffs/ Green Corridor planning projects and other Renville County parks, trails and recreational opportunities. Guest speakers include Loran Kaardal - Tatanka Bluffs/Green Corridor, and Chris Hettig - Renville County HRA/EDA.

Friday: Urban Conservation - Learn about improving your landscape and water quality through Rain Gardens, Rain Barrels, and Native Vegetation. Guest speaker is Tara Latozke - Renville County SWCD. Attendees will be entered into a drawing for a potted tree.
